    Athletes learn early (if coached correctly) how it applies to their specific sport and which to alot the most time to. Sprinters and distance runners increase capacity in both to make the body a better functioning machine. Knowing how and why the body adapts to exercise is important.

    aerobic exercise is taking in oxygen whilst you’re exercising, and using the oxygen your taking in as your exercising, kind of like a sustainable cycle.

    anaerobic is using up your oxygen reservesin a short busrt of exercise, such as sprinting.

    I’m not sure the anaerobic exercise burning calories after your workout is actually true. While this study from the journal of Exercise and Sport Sciences Reviews doesn’t specifically address anaerobic exercise, it does address the theory that you’ll burn more calories throughout the day after working out. There doesn’t seem to be any clinical evidence data to support that theory.

    OK the difference in a textbook is easy to define, or for the kind of exercise you’re doing. But what’s probably more important is knowing whilst you are running whether you’re aerobic or anaerobic. And that doesn’t just mean when you sprint or jog. I’ve been out on very long runs (so not exactly fast) but come back and clearly I’ve been in the anaerobic zone (ketones on the breath). This made me realise that knowing when that starts to happen is a key factor in endurance running. Or more likely, knowing how to prevent it happening (by that time I realised I’d pushed too hard).

    Tom, I don’t think you develop ketosis because you are in anaerobic metabolism, but rather, because you are burning fat. Make sure you don’t have diabetes. If you are indeed burning that much fat and developing ketosis, you may need to eat some carbs during you run. The muscle is much better equiped to generate power when burning glucose than fat.
